OTOSCOPY
A comfortable clinical screening examination using either an Otoscope or a video scope which allows a thorough inspection of the auditory canal and Tympanic membrane (eardrum). We are checking the physical condition of the ear and also checking for any physical abnormalities such as excessive wax, foreign bodies and / or infection. Video Otoscopy allows you to see what we see in real time on a monitor.
AUDIOMETRIC HEARING TEST
An Audiometric hearing test is a painless non- invasive test that measures an individuals’ ability to hear different sounds at different pitches. Each ear is tested individually using insert earphones and a bone conduction headset. It is used to measure hearing thresholds. The test results are completely dependent on the responses from the individual being tested. Clear instruction is always given so you are not in any doubt how to respond. Your test results will then be explained and you will be advised what treatment options are available and how best to proceed based on these results.
TYMPANOMETRY
A further clinical test to complement the hearing assessment. It is a medical test to measure the function and movement of the eardrum and middle ear. It is also used to alert as to any middle ear problems such as fluid behind the eardrum, glue ear and/or eustachian tube disfunction. A probe is inserted into the ear canal and it changes the pressure in the ear in order to make the eardrum move back and forth. Measurements of the movement are then recorded on a tympanogram.
WAX REMOVAL
Wax is a natural occurrence produced by the body in order to protect the eardrum and assist in the cleaning and lubrication of the ear canal. It is composed of skin cells and oily secretions from the sebaceous and ceruminous glands in the ear canal. With its’ antiseptic qualities it also keeps germs, bacteria and foreign bodies at bay. For the most part, the ear deals with excretion of the wax, however, for many individuals the wax builds up and needs to be removed by a qualified wax practitioner. Having too much wax can result in earache, dizziness, feeling of fullness in the ear(s), tinnitus and / or decreased hearing.
Traditionally ear syringing was the method used to remove. In recent years micro suction wax removal has replaced syringing. It is widely accepted as being the most advanced, safest and pain free method of wax removal. High grade surgical microscopic loupes are used to illuminate and magnify the canal. A low-pressure suction device is then used to safely remove the wax. It uses single-use- only micro suction tubes which means it is completely safe and eliminates any risk of infection.
TINNITUS
Tinnitus is the hearing of sound when no external sound is present. While often described as a ringing, it may also sound like a clicking, hiss or roaring. Occasionally music sounds are heard. The sound may be soft or loud, low pitched or high pitched and appear to be coming from one ear or both. Most of the time, it comes on gradually. In more acute cases, the sound can cause depression or anxiety and can interfere with concentration.
TREATMENTS FOR TINNITUS
Although in most cases (save for causes such as ear wax) it is not possible to cure tinnitus, it can be managed and alleviated through the correct use of hearing aids and Tinnitus Maskers. At the clinic we can best advise how to use your hearing aid to best help alleviate symptoms of your tinnitus.
There may be times when onward referral for treatment such as Cognitive Behavioural Treatments (CBT) may be more effective for specific cases.
